The rain is on the map before it's on the glass.
Your car can already do a version of this — and when you turn it on, it clears your map to do it. Points of interest go, and you get weather instead of the drive. codriver paints precipitation underneath everything else it's already showing you: the police report two junctions up, the camera on the bend, the charger you were headed for. One map, still doing its job, with the wall of water at junction 14 on it forty kilometres before the wipers find out.
━━ HOW IT READS
A wash over the road, not a weather app.
Precipitation sits under the pins and under the traffic lines, at an opacity that reads as weather rather than hiding the route. Heavier rain is denser. There is no dial, no timeline scrubber, no hourly panel — the layer answers one question, which is where the water is between you and where you're going.
It refreshes every ten minutes, which is how often the radar network publishes. Frames are cached on our side and shared between every driver on the same stretch of road, so the tenth car through a rainstorm costs the same as the first.
━━ WHAT IT IS, AND ISN'T
Current conditions. Not a forecast.
The layer shows where rain is now. It does not model where it will be in an hour, and we'd rather say so than let you find out. At road speed that distinction matters less than it sounds: the cell you can see sitting over the next valley is twenty minutes away at motorway pace, and twenty minutes is all the warning anyone needs to decide whether to back off or push on.
It also won't nag you about it. No pop-up telling you to reduce speed in adverse conditions, no severity banner, no exclamation marks. It's a layer on a map. You're driving; you can read a map.

Drivers ask
Doesn't my Tesla already have a weather radar?
Probably, and it's good. Since the 2024 holiday update there's a precipitation overlay behind the icon at the far right of the map — Weather Channel data, animating the last three hours. The difference isn't the radar, it's the map underneath it: switching the car's overlay on hides your points of interest apart from charging, so you're looking at weather instead of at your drive. codriver's rain sits under everything else on the layer — community alerts, speed cameras, chargers — because on a wet motorway the useful picture is the rain and the police report and the charger, together. (Two footnotes: the car's overlay skipped Model S and Model X built before 2021, and unlike the browser codriver runs in, it won't work over a phone hotspot — it needs Premium Connectivity proper.)
Is this a forecast?
No, and we won't dress it up as one. The layer shows where precipitation is right now, refreshed every ten minutes. What makes it useful at speed is distance, not time: at 120 km/h the storm you can see forty kilometres up the road is twenty minutes from your windscreen. That's the look-ahead — reading the map, not predicting the sky.
How current is it?
The radar publishes a new frame every ten minutes and codriver picks it up on the same cadence. Each frame is cached on our side and shared between every driver looking at the same stretch of road, so the layer costs the car one small image per tile rather than a live stream.
Does it slow the map down?
It's one raster layer under the pins, drawn at a resolution matched to the radar data itself rather than the zoom level — so it stays cheap even on MCU 2. It's off by default regardless: turn it on when the sky looks like it matters, leave it off the rest of the year.
Does it cost extra?
No. Rain radar is part of the map, not a Premium tier. Flip it on in Settings → Sources → Rain radar.
Where does the weather data come from?
A commercial radar network (Rainbow.ai), credited in the map's attribution the same way the basemap and charger data are. codriver proxies and caches it rather than pointing your car straight at a third party — the same pattern the alert and charger layers use, so no upstream sees your driving.
